Cultured pearls are living gems. Well maintained, quality pearls can be passed down for generations while retaining their lustre.
Why pearls are fragile
Nacre is composed of aragonite bonded by conchiolin. Acids attack it, chemicals degrade it, and abrasion wears it down.
The "last on, first off" rule
Put your pearls on last when getting ready, take them off first when you get home — after perfume, hairspray, sunscreen, makeup and deodorant.
Cleaning after each wear
Gently wipe with a soft, slightly damp cloth, then dry before storing.
Never use: ultrasonic cleaners, steam, standard jewellery cleaners, alcohol, acetone, or white vinegar.
Storage
Nacre (2.5-4.5 Mohs) is softer than most gemstones. Store each pearl piece in a separate soft pouch.
Necklaces: watch the thread
Have a pearl necklace restrung every 2-3 years if worn regularly.
Daily precautions
