Not all cultured pearls are alike. Behind this generic term lie four distinct species, produced by different molluscs, in different geographical areas, with very different characteristics and value.
Akoya pearl: classic Japanese elegance
Produced by Pinctada fucata, mainly in Japan and China. Size 2-11 mm, very round, white or cream with pink or silver overtones, exceptional lustre. Ideal for timeless classics.
Tahitian pearl: the Polynesian exception
Produced by Pinctada margaritifera, exclusively in French Polynesia. Size 8-18 mm, varied shapes, unique natural dark colours from grey to green to purple. Ideal for modern, bold jewellery.
South Sea pearl: the queen of pearls
Produced by Pinctada maxima, mainly in Australia, Philippines and Indonesia. Size 9-20 mm, very thick nacre, satiny lustre, white to deep gold. Ideal for exceptional pieces.
Freshwater pearl: the most accessible
Cultivated in Hyriopsis mussels, mainly in China. Size 2-15 mm, great variety of shapes and colours (white, pink, lavender, purple). Ideal for everyday jewellery.
